Day 4: Machu Picchu and Return to Cusco

Today is the most important day of your expedition. To make the most of the day, we encourage all groups to have an early breakfast before taking one of the first buses to Machu Picchu (starting from 5:30 a.m.). The hotel will store your luggage while you’re at Machu Picchu. This way, you’ll only need to carry your backpack with all the essentials to Machu Picchu. The bus journey from Aguas Calientes to Machu Picchu will take approximately 30 minutes. Once at Machu Picchu, your guide will lead you to a strategic point from where you can observe the Inca architecture of Machu Picchu, and they will take you to a sought-after spot from where you’ll watch the sunrise (depending on the weather), and you’ll be able to take your postcard-perfect photo of Machu Picchu. Then you’ll start the guided tour of the main sectors of the citadel, for a time of 2.5 hours. During this guided tour, you’ll learn more about the history and culture of the Inca Empire. At the end of the tour, you’ll have some time for yourself or, if you arranged a hike to Huayna Picchu (must be booked months in advance as they sell out and costs $75 per person), your guide will indicate where you’ll start this hike, which will take no more than 2 hours round trip. For your return from Machu Picchu, we recommend starting to head back to the town of Aguas Calientes no later than 2 hours before the train departure. Your guide will remind you of the train schedules before your return.

The train back from Aguas Calientes to Ollantaytambo will take approximately 2 hours. In Ollantaytambo, our Alpaca staff will be waiting for you outside the station exit gate, ready to take you back to Cusco in our private transport. The journey to Cusco will take approximately 2 hours and will drop you off at your hotel in Cusco.

Machu Picchu Mountain can also be hiked instead of Huayna Picchu Mountain. This hike is more challenging and takes a minimum of three hours, round trip (with an additional cost of $75 per person).
