Lima was called the City of the Kings in honor of the recent celebration of the Three Kings’ Day, the Incas were defeated, and Lima became the capital of the Viceroyalty of Peru from where the Spaniards governed Peru; the majority of Spaniards conquered most of South America.

Also known as the Plaza de Armas of Lima, it is surrounded by the Government Palace, the Cathedral of Lima, the Archbishop’s Palace, the Municipal Palace, and the Club de la Unión.

Originally, it was a space surrounded by various shops, used as a bullring, and as a tribunal for the execution of the Holy Inquisition, which was restored during the viceregal era in Peru.

Likewise, the Plaza Mayor de Lima has been the historical setting for various events concerning Peru, both during its viceregal, colonial, and republican eras, such as the foundation of Lima and the proclamation of Peru’s independence in 1821 by the Liberator, General Don José de San Martín.

On the other hand, Lima’s architectural blend trend adorns the square, with notable features being the viceregal balconies and the ancient bronze fountain dating back to 1650.
