Waqrapukara represents a great alternative for those seeking a different adventure during their stay in the city of Cusco, with its impressive landscapes that start from wonderful lagoons, to get lost among the mountains, streams, and rocky walls of this part of the Apurimac Canyon.

The archaeological center of Waqrapukara territorially belongs to the district of Acos in the province of Acomayo in the department of Cusco, and is located at an approximate altitude of 4140 meters above sea level.

The designation “Waqrapukara” seems to be of current use when translated as “fortress of the horns,” making a clear allusion to the horns of cattle, which are of recent presence in the environment. In addition, there is among the population a perhaps previous designation, “Llama Pukara,” which would translate as “fortress of the llama,” which would reveal a much more coherent analogy with the local culture. There is also the designation “Llaqtapukara,” which would translate as “barracks of the town,” which perhaps alludes to the place as the last refuge of resistance that the Qanchis people opposed to the Inca empire. Finally, we can mention the archaeologist Miguel Cornejo, who, beyond a linguistic interpretation, indicates that the place represents “the architecture of Power.”

HIGHLIGHTS

The first group: It is located in the upper part, in the middle of a rocky spur, where two groups of enclosures are observed that are separated by a wide central space. The enclosures have passages, doorways with double jambs, and niches of functional and ornamental character.

It is admirable how the rock formations were integrated as part of the ensemble, building walls at the edge of the precipice and making cuts in the natural rocks. Due to its architectural characteristics, it appears that they correspond to buildings of eminently ceremonial use.

The second group: It is located in the lower part and consists of 8 terraces of approximately 153 meters long and a height of 1.80 meters that adapt to the terrain’s topography; at the western end, it presents two enclosures with double-jamb openings, niches, and fine masonry. Another 5 enclosures are observed at the eastern end.
