Next to the majestic Salkantay snow-capped mountain lies the Humantay glacier or snow-capped mountain, which stands at 5450 meters above sea level, and at its foothills, immediately lies the impressive Humantay Lake at 4200 meters above sea level. It’s a natural spectacle characterized by the beautiful turquoise color that contrasts impressively with the entire landscape adorned with the characteristic flora and fauna of this altitude, where only the purity of the mountains is breathed.
The locals understand the word as “sacred head” or “head of the gods”. However, analyzing the word in the Quechua framework, we can simply mention that the word that most directly resembles “head” (Huma) is also used as principal or important, which would highlight its importance at some point in history. Furthermore, the suffix “ntay” could be related to the possession suffixes used in current Quechua, or it could also be more archaic. Finally, there is the possibility that the denomination came from a different language and that its use simply continued thereafter.
Between 4:30 and 5:00 a.m., our pick-up from your respective hotel begins, and then we’ll board the tourist bus that will take you to the town of Mollepata (2900 meters above sea level). The journey takes approximately 2 hours, where we’ll have our delicious breakfast and stock up on the last provisions. Then, we’ll continue by bus for another hour until we reach the community of Soraypampa (3900 meters above sea level). The road we’ll take is a dirt road, and upon arrival, we’ll prepare for our hike, which will last about an hour until we reach Humantay Lake (4200 meters above sea level).
During our walk, we’ll see beautiful landscapes and the impressive snow-capped Salkantay mountain, and explore the area until we have a view of Mount Humantay (5450 meters above sea level) in the Vilcabamba range in the Andes. It’s a 2 km walk, and you’ll experience it firsthand in this same place. Then, we’ll begin the return journey to Soraypampa, where we’ll explore the Salkantay road (6271 meters above sea level) and the view of this sacred mountain, the second highest mountain in the Cusco region. After that, we’ll enjoy our delicious buffet lunch before our transportation takes us back to the city of Cusco. Our tour ends around 4:30 to 5:00 p.m. Our final stop will be near the Plaza de Armas in Cusco.

lima - paracas
