Day 1: CUSCO – HIDROELECTRICA – AGUAS CALIENTES

We pick you up in the morning from your hotel in Cusco to drive to Hidroelectrica, a 6-hour journey by car. We make a stop in Santa Teresa for a delicious lunch at local restaurants. After lunch, we continue by car for another hour to Hidroelectrica, where the car road ends and the train tracks to Aguas Calientes begin. It’s time to prepare for a flat 3-hour walk to the base town of Machu Picchu. Once in the town, we take you to the hostel to shower and relax before dinner in the city and prepare for the day at Machu Picchu.

Day 2: MACHU PICCHU – CUSCO

Wake up early for breakfast at the hotel to arrive at Machu Picchu in time to see the most iconic Inca constructions almost without people. There are two ways to reach the main entrance of Machu Picchu: BUS UP WALK UP

BUS UP: If you want to go up to Machu Picchu by bus, you must buy a bus ticket in Aguas Calientes the night before. Early in the morning, around 4:30 am, we head to the bus stations to queue up for the first buses to Machu Picchu. Buses start departing at 5:30 am from Aguas Calientes to Machu Picchu, a 25-minute bus ride to the main entrance of Machu Picchu. Then we enter Machu Picchu when it opens at 6:00 am.

WALK UP: Walking to Machu Picchu takes 1 hour and 20 minutes at a regular pace. Start walking at 4:00 am from Aguas Calientes to the first checkpoint located right at the base of Machu Picchu, which opens at 5:00 am. This checkpoint is only for hikers, where you must show your Machu Picchu ticket and your passport. After that, you have to walk up to Machu Picchu, which takes a 45-minute hike, involving almost 1700 Inca steps. The idea of walking to Machu Picchu is to beat the buses to be the first to arrive at Machu Picchu. Once at the main checkpoint, you enter Machu Picchu. Whichever option you may take, the idea is to arrive at Machu Picchu in the morning when it opens. Once inside, you’ll have time to enjoy the incredible views and take photographs. Then we provide you with a 2-hour guided tour of Machu Picchu. After that, you’ll have free time to explore Machu Picchu on your own. After spending 5 hours at Machu Picchu, you must walk back to Hidroelectrica to take the car back to Cusco.

NOTE: If you’re thinking of doing extra hiking options in Machu Picchu like climbing Machu Picchu Mountain or Huayna Picchu Mountain, it’s better to spend an extra night in Aguas Calientes and return to Cusco on the third day because to do this you need at least extra 8 to 9 hours to explore the entire Machu Picchu park.
